Un panoramique tourne au cœur d'un quartier de Lancy, dans la banlieue de Genève, alors en pleine mutation : sous la pression immobilière, les maisons individuelles et leurs jardins cèdent la place aux immeubles. À mesure que la vue tourne, le centre de l'image s'efface et un moment du panoramique vient recouvrir l'autre (comme les choix d'urbanisation substituent un état du quartier au précédent). Mais le son ne suit pas l'image : la bande sonore diffuse ce qui se passe dans la partie centrale disparaissant du cadre (bruits de travaux, vaisselle, pas, circulation, télévision…) aux moments où la caméra leur fait face.

Chantier déplace le dispositif de la série vers le montage sonore : ce que l'image occulte, l'oreille continue de le percevoir. Le centre disparu n'est plus un manque, il devient un hors-champ habité, dont la vie parvient au spectateur par un autre canal. L'œuvre fait ainsi entendre ce que la transformation urbaine fait d'ordinaire disparaître sans bruit : les usages, les gestes domestiques, la vie d'un quartier en train de changer d'état.

A panorama turns at the heart of a neighbourhood in Lancy, on the outskirts of Geneva, then in full mutation: under property pressure, detached houses and their gardens are giving way to apartment blocks. As the view rotates, the centre of the image fades out and one moment of the panorama comes to cover another (much as planning decisions substitute one state of the neighbourhood for the last). But the sound does not follow the image: the soundtrack broadcasts what is happening in the vanishing central part of the frame (building work, dishes, footsteps, traffic, a television…) at the moments when the camera faces them.

Chantier shifts the series' dispositif towards sound editing: what the image conceals, the ear goes on perceiving. The vanished centre is no longer a lack; it becomes an inhabited off-screen whose life reaches the viewer through another channel. The work thus makes audible what urban transformation usually makes disappear without a sound: the uses, the domestic gestures, the life of a neighbourhood in the act of changing state.
