Trajectoire
Évolution de ma démarche : comment une méthode a précédé sa théorie, de 2006 à 2026.The evolution of my approach: how a method came before its theory, from 2006 to 2026.
La méthode a précédé sa théorie. Cette note en donne les strates. The method came before its theory. This note sets out its strata. DPB, 2026
I have kept every statement of approach I have written over twenty years. Rereading them, one thing is striking: almost everything I can name today was already there — in different words, or in no words at all. The method came before its theory. This note sets out its strata.
L'atelier des intuitionsThe studio of intuitions
My first work, in 2006, is a shoe worn as a hat: absurdity and displacement as an operation of thought and critique, reversal as a gesture. My first statement of approach, in 2008-2009, already speaks of my interest in “porous, ambiguous spaces that are more than themselves”. Porosity — which fifteen years later would carry my films of rivers and forests — is already there. From the start I am drawn to the search for methods to “activate” a work, to “make it work: implement it”. And a conviction: to produce a great deal, not in order to accumulate, but in order to “think in a practical way”.
La technique comme milieuTechnique as a milieu
In 2010, my essay was entitled “Working with Technology”: it explored regimes of images and sought to reveal the modern prism through which image technology is viewed. This was the era of Vidéo-dessin — the body in white, with its back to the wall, the city captured through the lens of the camera that watches over it — and of the first decisions that have stayed with me ever since: accepting the machine's format rather than choosing it, and not cropping the image. In 2011–2012, the phrase that would become my central dialectic emerged: the more I show, the more I conceal. In 2013, my HEAD master's thesis established the dispositif as a point of articulation between anthropology and the visual arts, and my oral graduation presentation articulated the objective I still pursue: to place the viewer in a position to become, themselves, an anthropologist of their own world. The shift towards anthropology, however, predated the master's thesis: I completed my bachelor's degree in anthropology in 2011, and my first investigative photographic series date from 2008.
With Perdus en mer… (2014), then 1689 (2015), the gesture changes in nature before I know how to name it: the film no longer records a situation, it brings one into being. The 2015 statement registers the effects — my dispositifs become “dissonant echoes” of the stagecraft of power, and aesthetics a mode of analysis whose heart and engine is the sensible. This is where I begin to put into practice the principles developed in my 2013 thesis. In 2016, one sentence condenses the intention: to do ethnography with the tools of audiovisual recording and distribution, inside the exhibition space. That same year Entretiens avec Google comes to an end, eight interviews conducted since 2009: my first work of long duration, the temporal matrix of the seven-year undertakings that would follow. In 2018, painting returns as a tool for thinking, with a study of proportions.
How to Represent Porosity to Fill Strategical Emptiness?.
My 2019 statement contains a sentence I only understood later: “I instaure a critical distance”. The verb was there before the theory. That same year, porosity goes public — a paper given in Hamburg, under the tutelage of Bruno Latour, titled How to Represent Porosity to Fill Strategical Emptiness?. Then the living takes its full place: the confluences, the enforestment, the paintings of the globe turned inside out like a glove. In 2021-2022, Latour's Master's in Experimentation in Arts and Politics (SPEAP) gives me the means to name what I had been doing. And Contrat Social (2019-2025) carries the gesture through: two activists in wheelchairs govern for a day inside an actual seat of power, and there the camera does not capture a testimony, it guarantees a voice that decides. It is Étienne Souriau, in the end, who gives its name to the verb I had been looking for since 2019: to instaure.
La théorie tirée des œuvresTheory drawn from the works
I am now writing the book this trajectory makes possible: Fictionner le réel. The 2013 thesis sketches; the works put it to the test; the book draws a practical theory out of what the practice has taught. A statement of approach is not written once: it is rewritten as the works teach it what it was looking for. It took me twenty years to learn to name a gesture that was already there, whole, in a shoe worn on the head.
