Un homme marche sur un chemin. Il ramasse un carnet tombé à terre et se met à le lire à voix haute. La caméra le suit, en un seul plan séquence à l'épaule, puis s'écarte : gros plans de branches, de sol, de feuilles — parfois une feuille morte tombe.

La voix cherche, se reprend, tourne autour d'une question ; le regard, lui, part vers le pourtour du chemin, vers ce que la marche longe.

Le texte lu est un carnet de pensée sur « le premier degré » : cette façon de prendre chaque chose pour ce qu'elle est, de n'être que dans ce qu'on voit. À l'explicite du premier degré, le film oppose « les 360 degrés » : le pourtour, l'implicite, ce qui tourne autour. Le plan-séquence marché tient les deux ensemble — la voix au centre, le monde sur les bords.

Surfatique fait de la surface une pensée, non un défaut. La surface est une géographie, un relief ; la profondeur, un empilement de temps. Le film revendique une lecture qui attache plus d'importance au fond qu'à la forme, à l'idée qu'à l'apparence — et cherche à penser « comme la surface de la terre », en allers-retours plutôt qu'en ligne droite.

A man walks along a path. He picks up a notebook that has fallen to the ground and begins to read it aloud. The camera follows him in a single handheld sequence shot, then drifts aside: close-ups of branches, of the ground, of leaves — now and then a dead leaf falls.

The voice searches, corrects itself, circles a question; the eye, meanwhile, wanders to the edges of the path, to what the walk skirts.

The text being read is a notebook on "the first degree": that way of taking each thing for what it is, of being only in what one sees. Against the explicitness of the first degree, the film sets "the 360 degrees" — the surround, the implicit, what circles around. The walking sequence shot holds both: the voice at the centre, the world at the edges.

Surfatique makes surface a form of thought, not a flaw. Surface is a geography, a relief; depth, a stacking of time. The film claims a reading that cares more for content than for form, for the idea than for appearance — and tries to think "like the surface of the earth," in back-and-forth rather than a straight line.
