Quatre objets d'usage courant — un seau, une chaise, une paire de sandales, un plat — fixés au mur à hauteur des yeux, comme des images. Ils sont en bois brut, un peu gauches, visiblement inutilisables : le seau ne tiendrait pas l'eau, la chaise pas un corps.
Chacun a été fabriqué en forêt, à partir de branches trouvées, avec deux outils seulement, un sécateur et une scie — sans clou, sans vis, sans autre matière que le bois ramassé. À côté, un jeu de photographies documente la fabrication ; une facture accompagne chaque objet. Le titre est cette liste de prix.
Le prix n'est pas fixé au marché : il applique le taux horaire du SMIC au temps de travail passé — six heures pour le seau, deux et demie pour les sandales. Les factures poussent le calcul jusqu'à l'absurde en alignant, sous un même objet, des valeurs différentes qui ne peuvent s'accorder : son poids en bois de chauffage, son usage nul, l'« artiste non coté », la « propension à payer », etc. Un travail sans finalité utile est ainsi soumis, pièce à pièce, aux grilles qui prétendent tout tarifer — et les fait se contredire.
Four everyday objects — a bucket, a chair, a pair of sandals, a dish — mounted on the wall at eye level, like pictures. They are raw wood, slightly clumsy, plainly unusable: the bucket would not hold water, the chair would not hold a body.
Each was made in the forest, from found branches, with two tools only — pruning shears and a saw — no nail, no screw, no material but the gathered wood. Beside them, a set of photographs documents the making; an invoice accompanies each object. The title is that price list.
The price is not set by the market: it applies the hourly minimum wage to the time spent — six hours for the bucket, two and a half for the sandals. The invoices push the reckoning to absurdity, lining up under a single object different values that cannot agree: its weight as firewood, its nil use, the "unrated artist", the "willingness to pay", and so on. Labour with no useful end is thus submitted, piece by piece, to the grids that claim to price everything — and made to contradict them.
