Found footage: editing structure transcribed from disaster-film trailers
A cup of coffee in close-up. A hand drops an aspirin tablet into it; it dissolves. Nothing else — yet the image is cut with black frames, driven by tense music, punctuated by title cards and swells of sound.
You brace for catastrophe. The pacing promises imminent disaster; all that arrives is a tablet dissolving.
The editing and its jolts are not invented. The editing structure of Hollywood disaster-film trailers (each shot length, the interleaved black frames, the soundtrack, the cards, the titles, and so on) was transcribed to the second, then applied unchanged to a single fixed shot, re-cut according to each source trailer.
Emptied of its spectacle, the grammar of the disaster blockbuster stands exposed for what it is: a rhythmic carcass that manufactures urgency regardless of what it shows. This video holds that grammar at a distance by running it, to the point of absurdity, on a tablet melting in coffee.
