A man has been standing still for hours, waiting in the forest of the Ardèche. He holds a bow. Around him the day turns, then night falls. He says nothing; neither does the film — no dialogue, no commentary.
What we follow is not a hunt but an attention. This man reads the ground, the passages, the tracks; he learns the animals' habits and tunes his own presence to that of the place. For a long time there is nothing to see but the forest — until we come to feel, as he does, that a discreet presence inhabits it, always uncertain.
The editing of image and sound slowly shifts the gaze from the man to the forest itself, until the frontiers between human, animal and vegetal turn porous. The hunter stops being a predator and becomes a reader of the territory.
This tracker belongs to a generation that dreams of re-enchanting the hunt, somewhere between an aesthetic inherited from Romanticism and the reality of land management. The film watches that stance, patiently, without settling it — and leaves the viewer between wonder, exploration and doubt.
Un lecteur du territoireA reader of the territory
Allure Sylvestre explores the relationship a bow hunter has with the forests of the Ardèche. With no commentary and no explanatory discourse, the film follows the patient gestures of a tracker who spends long hours watching animals, reading the traces they leave, and tuning his own presence to that of the milieu he passes through — and which ends up passing through him.
Far from a spectacular representation of hunting, the film is concerned with a practice founded on attention, on waiting, and on an intimate knowledge of the living. The hunter no longer appears merely as a predator, but as a reader of the territory, whose movements, perceptions and decisions take shape in contact with the animals, the plants and the rhythms of the forest.
The work on image and sound seeks to shift the viewer's perception towards that of the milieu itself. Over the course of a day and a night, a discreet presence, never quite certain, seems to inhabit the forest. Between sensory experience and documentary observation, Allure Sylvestre offers an immersion in a world where the boundaries between human, animal and plant become porous.
