The theoretical matrix of the whole practice. Its thesis: what articulates art and anthropology is not a borrowing of forms (an art that merely looks ethnographic) but the dispositif, taken as the pivot between the two. Cinema, a “great producer of dispositifs” since 1895, supplies the model; the essay film gives its exemplary figure, a thinking form that, after Montaigne's Essays, starts from what is near and exposes its own search as it unfolds. Méliès and the Lumière brothers are no longer opposed but held as two faces of one machine: artifice combined with instrument makes an ethnographic craft.
The text forges the vocabulary the works will later execute: the dispositif of creation and the dispositif of implementation (after Goodman) — implementation being the phase where the public experiences the work and meaning is shared; the dispositive micro-narrations produced by variation and repetition; art-as-ethnography. It rereads Jean Rouch's La Pyramide humaine, where participants take on a role, and closes on a “Bourdieusian impulse”: an art that implicates those it speaks of, through joint analysis, face to face. Twelve years later, after testing it in the works, Fictionner le réel will draw from it a deep, practical theory.
